A few weeks ago I was a guest on the 3 devs and a maybe podcast to discuss Varnish, performance & caching.

Back in 2015 I had a similar talk with Edd on HTTP/2.

In this weeks episode we discuss the Varnish ‘HTTP accelerator’ with Mattias Geniar.

We start off the show with the problem Varnish is trying to solve, how it decides to cache content and the power within its’ request/response life-cycle. We then move on to highlight testing strategies, tools to gain insight into your Varnish instance and cache invalidation options (Purging vs. Banning). Finally, we touch upon Edge Side Includes, Mattias’s own podcast and his new DNS Spy product.

Listening back, I don’t think I said many mistakes. But a couple to clarify;

  • ESI’s in Varnish are done sequentially, not in parallel (that’s what Varnish Plus is for)
  • I mess up request/response quite often, sorry ‘bout that
  • PURGE requests: you can actually do a PURGE that translates to a ban, allowing you to use regex’s (example)

I was surprisingly nervous at times, keeping awkward silences. I’ll just pretend those were included for dramatic reasons. :P
